The Delaware
National Estuarine Research Reserve (DNERR) is a cooperative program
between the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental
Control, Division of Soil and Water Conservation, Delaware
Coastal Programs and the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The goal of the program
is to establish, protect, and manage natural estuarine habitats for
research and education. The DNERR consists of two main components, the
Blackbird Creek and St.
Jones Reserve. These sites include both brackish and freshwater
estuaries, and represent the diverse estuarine ecosystems found throughout

The St. Jones Reserve is open to the public Monday through Friday from
8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and during otherwise scheduled public events.

Facilities - The St. Jones Center for Estuarine Studies is a state owned and operated environmental education/research facility. The center features public areas of a foyer, two classrooms that can be combined into an auditorium and a wet-lab classroom. Facilities are available for use by other educational, governmental, natural resource and non-profit groups. Friends
of the Reserve - A
group that meets once a month for guest speakers, presentations, lectures,
and outdoor activities. "Friends" also volunteer at the reserve, assisting
with stewardship activities, canoe trips, nature walks, and various other
programs. This group is a wonderful way to help promote and appreciate
Delaware's estuaries and other natural wonders. Volunteer Opportunities - You can make a difference and help conserve Delaware's estuaries by volunteering at the St. Jones Reserve. |
