St. Jones Reserve Center

The Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve (DNERR) is a cooperative program between the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Division of Soil and Water Conservation, Delaware Coastal Programs and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The goal of the program is to establish, protect, and manage natural estuarine habitats for research and education. The DNERR consists of two main components, the Blackbird Creek and St. Jones Reserve. These sites include both brackish and freshwater estuaries, and represent the diverse estuarine ecosystems found throughout the
Mid-Atlantic.

The St. Jones Reserve is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and during otherwise scheduled public events.

Calendar of Events - A quarterly publication listing our current public programs.

Education - The St. Jones Center for Estuarine Studies offers site based and outreach environmental educational programs for grades K-12. On-site programs are offered at the St. Jones Reserve, located ½ mile east of the John Dickinson Plantation and south of the Dover Air Force Base. Outreach programs are available for classroom presentations at local schools. This site outlines the school programs offered.

Facilities - The St. Jones Center for Estuarine Studies is a state owned and operated environmental education/research facility. The center features public areas of a foyer, two classrooms that can be combined into an auditorium and a wet-lab classroom. Facilities are available for use by other educational, governmental, natural resource and non-profit groups.

Friends of the Reserve - A group that meets once a month for guest speakers, presentations, lectures, and outdoor activities. "Friends" also volunteer at the reserve, assisting with stewardship activities, canoe trips, nature walks, and various other programs. This group is a wonderful way to help promote and appreciate Delaware's estuaries and other natural wonders.

Research -
A major research aspect of all NERR sites is the System Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP). To help us understand more about the environment here on the Reserve, we monitor weather and aquatic conditions. This data promotes national understanding of complex estuarine ecosystems.

The Skimmer - A quarterly publication on the News of the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Volunteer Opportunities - You can make a difference and help conserve Delaware's estuaries by volunteering at the St. Jones Reserve.
