Brownfields Success Stories

Wilco Plumbing

Wilco Plumbing, located across the Walnut Street Bridge from Wilmington’s Amtrak station is part of the former Pusey &Jones shipyards. Initiation for the site investigation arose after Amtrak announced interest in establishing its Centralized National Operational Center (CNOC) at the Wilco site. Upon successful remediation, the parcel is now being developed to the CNOC’s specifications with the only limit being a deed restriction limiting the use of the site to commercial or industrial purposes, and preventing the destruction of the building without further re-evaluation.

Amtrak further wanted to use the historic Wilco building as its shell for its new Center, preserving both a historic landmark as well as redeveloping a vacant brownfield site. When the CNOC opens its doors in early 1998, 230 new employees will add to the tax revenues, and a projected $10,000,000 dollars will have been injected into the local economy in construction-related projects.
