The 121 N. Poplar Street site is located across the street from The Sunday Breakfast Mission. The property formerly housed a Wilmington Housing Authority apartment building that had fallen into disrepair and was unused. SBM Housing, Inc., as a then prospective purchaser, requested the assistance of DNREC to determine the potential for rehabilitating the building and lot into a SRO complex for 54 homeless men.
SBM Housing is currently finishing the remediation of the property simultaneously with construction on the building. Capital improvements to the building and lot are projected near $1,500,000 dollars. The new facility will employ 12, and will help rejuvenate an economically disadvantaged neighborhood.
