Studying Seeds - Homeschool Program
Thursday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Students will comb the park looking for and learning about seeds and the plants they come from. Hands-on activities will teach seed anatomy and how the plants of the park manage to grow from their tiny beginnings. Call 302-284-4526 to pre-register by Oct. 4. Meet at the nature center. $3 per child.

Worms! Worms! Worms! - Preschool Program
Friday, Oct. 6, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Children will be able to get hands-on experience with these slimy decomposers and learn how these critters help nature. Plenty of activities are included in the fun. Kids will go on a “worm hunt” along the Pondside Nature Trail and take home their very own worm composting starter kit so they witness the wonders of worms everyday. Call 302-284-4526 to pre-register by Oct. 5. Meet at the nature center. $2 per child.

Mysteries of Migration
Saturday, Oct. 7, 9 a.m.
View the many species of birds that pass by Killens Pond on their flight south for the winter. Explore how and why they make this incredible journey and which native wild foods they are likely to stop for and consume fuel for their journey. Pre-registration is required by calling 302-284-4526 by Oct. 6. Meet at the nature center.

Native Knowledge
Saturday, Oct. 7, 1 p.m.
Learning Native American culture is a fascinating way to link history and nature. Join in a hike to discover how Native Americans once used the land of Killens Pond and identify plants and animals they once used for food, medicines and tools. At the end of the program, students will learn the art of making dream catchers and the fascinating lore behind them. Call 302-284-4526 to pre-register by Oct. 6. Meet at the nature center. $2 per person.

Autumn Sunset Hayride
Saturday, Oct. 7, 6:30 p.m.
Join us at the campground amphitheater for an old-fashioned hayride through the park. View breathtaking fall foliage, beautiful sunsets, and learn about the history of the park and how nature is responding to the cooler days and nights of the autumn season. Afterwards, meet back at the amphitheater to roast marshmallows around a roaring campfire. $3 per person.

Harvest Hayride
Sunday, Oct. 8, 2 p.m.
Celebrate the season with the symbols of autumn. After a scenic hayride through the park, we’ll enjoy some apples and apple cider. Pre-registration is required by calling 302-284-4526 by Oct. 7. Meet at the Water Park parking lot. $3 per person.

We’ll take a hike along the trails and woods of the forest to search for seeds. Kids will learn all about how seeds grow, taste toasted pumpkinseeds, and plant some seeds in their homemade terrarium. Call 302-284-4526 to pre-register by Oct. 12. Meet at the nature center. $2 per child.

Harvest Moon Hike
Friday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m.
Come on a naturally guided hike along a section of the Pondside Nature Trail to discover the nocturnal world of the park under a full moon. Hikers will gain basic insight to the phases of the moon and other astronomical phenomena of the night sky. Along the way, learn about and search for owls, beavers and other nocturnal creatures. Pre-registration is required by calling 302-284-4526 by Oct. 12. Meet at the campground pavilion.

Second Annual Killens Pond 5K Run and WalkSaturday, Oct. 14
Check in: 8:30 a.m.-9:45 a.m.
Race: 10 a.m.
Walkers and runners alike will enjoy this friendly competition along Killens Pond’s scenic cross country trail. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded by age group. All participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Registration is $12 in advance and $15 on the day of the race. Registration forms are available at the park office. On the Trail of the White-Tailed Deer
Saturday, Oct. 14, 1 p.m.
No other Killens Pond mammal has captured as much attention and awe as the graceful white-tailed deer. The park’s hunting expert, Jim Charney, will discuss the lives, habits and natural history of this fascinating animal. The program will also cover tracking and hunting techniques appropriate for hunters and observers alike. Sign up at the park office or call (302) 284-4526 to register by Oct. 13. Meet at the nature center.

Pumpkin Carving
Saturday, Oct. 14
The park naturalist will teach you some tricks of the trade for creating great jack-o-lanterns for Halloween. Pumpkins, directions, tools, and carving templates will be provided. Also, learn how to make toasted pumpkinseeds in a variety of flavors. Pre-register by calling 302-284-4526 by Oct. 13. Children ages ten and under must be assisted by an adult. Meet at the campground amphitheater. $5 per person.

Group Hayrides
Saturdays and Sundays
Sept. 16 through Nov. 19
Killens Pond State Park is now taking reservations for scenic autumn hayrides for groups of 10 or more. View breathtaking fall foliage and tour the park at this beautiful and comfortable time of year. Each hayride includes a relaxing and an enjoyable one-hour guided ride and the park will provide refreshments. Please call 302-284-4526 for fees and available times.
