Pirates and Pirate Enthusiasts to Storm Shores at Gordon's Pond State Beach

Philly has its Mummers Parade. New Orleans has Mardi Gras. Indianapolis has the Indy 500. Gordon's Pond State Beach has the Howard Pyle Pirate Festival!

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17 pirates will take over the popular beach at North Shores, Rehoboth Beach, and everyone is invited to come along for the magic and mayhem.

The festival, which is named in honor of the famed artist and Delaware native son whose painting have contributed so much to the romantic image of the 18th century scoundrels, will feature a re-creation of the "Golden Age of Piracy," treasure hunts, costume contests, music and food. The tall ship Kalmar Nyckle will pay a courtesy call.

Speakers will discourse under the big tent on "Pirate Fact and Fiction" and "Howard Pyle: the Painter, the Pirates and the Cape."

Limited parking will be available at Gordon's Pond, but free shuttles will ply the roadways between Rehoboth’s boardwalk and convention center and the festival. Admittance is $2 per person.

For more information, contact the Seaside Nature Center at Cape Henlopen State Park, 302-645-6852.
