Division of Parks and Recreation Earmarks Funds for Gordon's Pond State Beach Parking Lot Improvements

The Division of Parks and Recreation, which received $1 million for Cape Henlopen State Parks infrastructure improvements and rehabilitation in the state’s 2001 Bond Bill, is making improvements to the Gordon’s Pond State Beach parking lot its highest priority. The 720-vehicle lot was built in 1969.

“The Division is aware that the parking lot is showing extensive signs of deterioration. The harsh environment has taken its toll over the years,” said Mark Chura, the Division’s planning, preservation and development manager. “Recognizing the increasing popularity of the location, the Division is committing its resources to renovating the area, including landscaping and addition of an air pumping station for surf fishing vehicles.”

Design and engineering are set to begin this year, with construction expected to begin in fall 2001.

Other Cape Henlopen projects to be funded by the appropriation will include design and engineering for a new visitors center; completion of landscaping and signage at the park entrance; a new exterior for the World War II maintenance building; demolition and removal of asbestos around WW II batteries Herring and 519; and preparation work for restoring a 12-inch cannon to Battery 519.
