Sept. 8, 2000 For more information, contact Franchon Beeks, Site Investigation Branch, Division of Air and Waste Management, 302-395-2600 Public Meeting on St. Georges Bridge Area Soil Testing To Be Held Sept. 13th at Gunning Bedford SchoolA public meeting to discuss the results of soil testing for lead contamination in June on residential properties in the St. Georges area and the Commodore McDonough playground will be held at the Gunning Bedford Middle School, Cox Neck Road, on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. Representatives from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Site Investigation and Restoration Branch, the states Division of Public Health and the Army Corps of Engineering will be available to answer questions and concerns of the community. To date, DNREC has required the Army Corps of Engineers to pick up all the visible lead paint chips from areas beneath the bridge. Testing of residents yards, gardens and play areas was also required. It has been determined by DNREC that the play yards at the Commodore McDonough School do not contain lead contamination. However, five of the 50 properties tested require re-testing and may require some limited soil clean up as a result of potentially having unhealthy lead contamination levels. Residents of the five properties have been notified personally by DNREC and the Division of Public Health. DNREC, the Division of Public Health and the Army Corps of Engineers continue to work cooperatively to test and clean up areas where paint chips have fallen. Public Health and DNREC have encouraged residents in the St. Georges Bridge area to have all children under age 6 tested for blood lead levels. Reports regarding the lead test results will be available for review at the public meeting and at the Delaware City library. -30- Document no. 40-01/00/09/08 |
