Another 5,000-10,000 Menhaden Found Dead at Torquay Canal

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is investigating an additional fish kill today of approximately 5,000-10,000 juvenile menhaden at Torquay Canal off Bald Eagle Creek in northern Rehoboth Bay.

According to Roy Miller, the juvenile menhaden found today were from the spring spawn and averaged about 70 millimeters in length, smaller than the 3 to 6 inch killed last week in an approximately 1 million juvenile menhaden kill at Bald Eagle Creek and Torquay Canal.

Low dissolved oxygen is suspected as the cause of the fish kill based on the dissolved oxygen readings at the site today, which were extremely low.
