Brandywine Zoo Under Construction for Visitor-Friendly Improvements

Delaware’s only zoo is getting a face-lift. The 95-year-old Brandywine Zoo, which is located on the Brandywine River in downtown Wilmington, will have a new entranceway, retail center, educational pavilion and more office space by mid-autumn.

A single new entranceway is being constructed on the cobblestone street of Monkey Hill, one of Wilmington’s cultural landmarks. It is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1, just in time for three fall events: Zoobilation, Oct. 7; Grandparents Day, Oct. 15; and Boo at the Zoo, Oct. 28. The project is part of an annual improvement campaign. The next phase includes construction of public bathrooms and an animal food commissary.

The Arthur A. Carota Education Pavilion, made possible through funds donated by MBNA, will showcase the zoo’s diverse year-round educational programming. The pavilion will eventually have an exhibit telling the story of endangered species in the world.

The Brandywine Zoo is managed and operated by the state Division of Parks and Recreation. A partner organization, the Delaware Zoological Society, raised the majority of the funds for these projects.

The 12-acre zoo specializes in animals native to the Americas and the temperate areas of Asia, including two Siberian tigers and several river otters. A recent improvement includes a new state-of-the-art Andean Condor exhibit that features an 110,000-cubic-foot fly cage. The zoo is open to the public everyday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is charged from April through October only.

Admission and Membership:

  • $1.50 for seniors and children 3 years and older
  • $3.00 adults
  • No charge for children under 3 years
  • Group rates are available

An annual membership is $30 and entitles members to free admittance to the Brandywine Zoo, newsletter, free admittance to over 100 zoos across the country, reduced rates for educational programs, special invitations to zoo events, and a subscription to ZooNews magazine.

The Brandywine Zoo has more than 73,000 visitors a year and a $500,000 operating budget used to support the facilities and the 150 animals housed there. For more information about the zoo or to find out how to join the Delaware Zoological Society, call the office at 571-7747 or 577-7787, or visit the office at 1001 North Park Drive, Wilmington.
