Community Advocacy Workshop to Focus on Pollution Prevention and Clean Production

A seminar/workshop, "Expanding Community Based Advocacy through Pollution Prevention and Clean Production," will be held at the Delaware Technical and Community College, Wilmington Campus, 333 Shipley St., on Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

DNREC is sponsoring the seminar in partnership with the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable, the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, and the Clean Production Network.

The seminar will provide examples of how community and environmental groups use pollution prevention and clean production to achieve community goals, such as: approaches to chemical accident prevention, developing community sustainability indicators and using community and children’s right to know information.

In addition to hearing from representatives of organizations such as West Harlem Environmental Action, Center for Neighborhood Development, Citizens for a Better Environment, Environmental Defense, Greenpeace, Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition and others, the seminar will also provide time for attendees to discuss goals and strategies with the speakers and each other.

Breakout sessions will be focused on educating constituents who play a key role in creating positive change within their communities, industries and schools. Subjects include: Smart Growth, Urban Redevelopment, Environmental Justice, Community Action Strategies, Manufacturing Partnership Case Studies and Life Cycle Approaches.

Attendees will also learn how to create legislative reform at a local and national level, interact with leading environmentalists in the country, take home models that have worked in the past, and gain access to a network of experts and resources.
