Departure of Lifeguards Leaves 2 State Park Beaches Unguarded

There will be no lifeguards at Gordons Pond State Beach and Fenwick State Beach beginning Aug. 14, the Division of Parks and Recreation has announced.

“It’s that time of year,” according to Clyde Shipman, park administrator. “Our lifeguards start leaving for college and sport camps and we are forced to keep some swimming areas unguarded. Swimming is not prohibited at those beaches, but it’s ‘at your own risk’”

“Unguarded Beach” signs are posted at all dune crossings, fee booths and other beach access areas.

Cape Henlopen’s main beach, Towers Ocean, Indian River Inlet and Fenwick Island State Park will be covered through Labor Day.
For more information, call the Division’s Operations Section, 302-739-4405.
