Reminder for Dog Owners: License Required

The Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife is reminding dog owners outside the City of Wilmington that all dogs must be licensed. The City of Wilmington issues its own license.

Licenses may be purchased at the Division’s Dover office at 89 Kings Highway or at many veterinarian clinics, pet shops, sporting goods stores and department stores. A current certificate of rabies immunization is required. To encourage spaying and neutering, licenses for sterilized dogs cost $3 for one year while those for unsterilized dogs are $6. Two-year and three-year licenses are also available. Licenses are not required for Seeing Eye, lead or guide dogs.

According to H. Lloyd Alexander, state wildlife administrator, license sales are down about 17 percent from last year and only about a quarter of the dog owners in this state purchase a dog license. “Licensing benefits dogs, dog owners and the community by preventing the spread of rabies, reuniting lost dogs with their owners and helping animal control officers resolve dog-related problems,” said Alexander.

Funds generated by the sales of licenses subsidize the animal control programs of the Delaware SPCA and the Kent County SPCA, which are under contract to the Division of Fish and Wildlife to enforce laws and respond to problems such as loose dogs and dog bites.
