Delaware Seeks Volunteers for Coastal Cleanup Sept. 16

Residents of the Delmarva Peninsula and New Jersey will again be joining forces this fall in the seventh annual Delmarva Coastal Cleanup. The effort aims to remove debris from the shores of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, their tributaries, as well as the Atlantic beaches.

The Delmarva Coastal Cleanup 2000 will be held Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers can participate at any one of 56 Delaware locations, from as far north as the Brandywine River in Wilmington to as far south as Fenwick Island bordering Maryland.

“The Coastal Cleanup has been a very successful event in Delaware and we’re happy to have the opportunity to work with our neighbors again,” said Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Nicholas A. DiPasquale. “Not only does this event benefit our environment, it serves as a great educational tool.”

Last year approximately 1,700 people from the Delmarva peninsula participated in the cleanup which netted more than 20,000 pounds of trash from about 100 miles of shoreline.

The event, co-sponsored by Conectiv, is part of the International Coastal Cleanup held annually in conjunction with the Coastweek’s Celebration. Although this is the fourteenth event for Delaware, several years ago representatives from Delaware, Maryland and Virginia joined forces to consolidate a number of cleanup programs which existed independently for a number of years. Cleanups will be held at approximately 80 locations throughout the peninsula.

“I believe we should keep our beaches and inland waterways clean, because those areas represent precious natural resources to the residents of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey,” said Matt Likovich of Conectiv’s Public Affairs Department. “Conectiv is proud to cosponsor the annual Coastal Cleanup as part of its environmental stewardship program.”

The types and quantities of trash collected in the various locations will be recorded on data cards and forwarded to the Center for Marine Conservation, which compiles the information for all of the cleanups held in the country and around the world. The information helps identify the source of the debris and focus efforts on eliminating or reducing it.

The success of these beach cleanups rely on dedicated and diverse group of volunteers. Youth groups, civic organizations, students, and individuals who participate make the difference in the local environment.
