Division of Parks and Recreation Announces New Reservation System for Disabled Campers Needing Accessible Campsites

Beginning Aug. 1, 2000, Delaware’s five state park campgrounds will accept reservations for accessible campsites. Currently, all campground camping is on a first-come first-served basis. Although cabins and yurts at Trap Pond State Park, Killens Pond State Park and Lums Pond State Park are reservable, this marks the first time that campsites may be reserved.

The handicap accessible campsite reservation system launches the first stage of a larger reservation system currently in the final stages of development. The Division of Parks and Recreation plans to launch a state-wide camping reservation system for all five camping parks in 2001. This will include a toll-free phone number so that campers may guarantee a site before they arrive in Delaware.

The new Campsite Reservation System for disabled campers was established by the General Assembly in June.

Highlights of the new reservation system:

  • Campers who are disabled will be able to reserve accessible campsites at the campgrounds in Delaware State Parks’ five modern campgrounds.
  • Reservations will be taken during standard park business hours beginning Aug. 1, 2000.
  • Reservations may be made by phone or in person and must be prepaid.
  • Reservations can be made up to seven months in advance, but no less than three days before camping occurs.
  • Park office contact numbers:
    • Cape Henlopen State Park, 302-645-8983
    • Delaware Seashore State Park, 302-227-2800
    • Killens Pond State Park, 302-284-4526
    • Lums Pond State Park , 302-368-6989
    • Trap Pond State Park, 302-875-5153
