Governor Presents DNREC Awards at State Fair

Governor Thomas R. Carper signed a Hunting and Fishing Day Proclamation and presented several awards today as part of the Governor’s Day festivities at the Delaware State Fair.

The Governor and DNREC Secretary Nicholas A. DiPasquale opened the award ceremony at the DNREC Pavilion by presenting the “Young Environmentalist of the Year” awards, which are administered through the Office of Information and Education.

Following the announcement and signing of the Hunting and Fishing Day Proclamation, fishing trophies were awarded to the winners of the Youth Fishing Tournament sponsored by the Division of Fish and Wildlife. The ceremony ended with a Service Award designated by the Division of Parks and Recreation.

Programs and award winners are as follows:

Young Environmentalist Awards:

Young Environmentalist of the Year – Ryan Walker, Concord High School, grade 9, nominated by Tom Yohe, adult scout leader.

Ryan proposed, designed, installed, funded and implemented a permanent orienteering course at Brandywine Creek Sate Park. His innovative project enhanced one of Delaware’s beautiful state parks.

Ryan proposed the project to Brad Rogers, park naturalist, and worked with him and the state to gain approval. He consulted with the Delaware Valley Orienteering Association and arranged for donation of the materials and labor. Ryan also designed the map and brochure for the course.

In his nomination and recommendation Yohe stated: “Orienteering is a growing sport bringing tens of thousands of people into the outdoors each year. By hosting a permanent orienteering course, Brandywine Creek State Park will be an even more
enjoyable natural destination for the citizenry of Delaware and the surrounding areas.” Ryan will receive a $200 award.

First Honorable Mention - John and Jarrad Van Stan, St. Marks High School, grade 11, nominated by Edward O’Donnell, 4-H advisor.

John and Jarrad participated in the Zeneca Biogrant Watershed Feeder Stream Project, spending several weeks testing the water and observing wildlife in a branch of the Cool Run. They took part in Streamwatch and “Stream Snapshot” activities in the Middle Run area.

They adopted, along with their family, a wetland at I-95 and Route 141 and Airport Road and are also involved in testing water and monitoring wildlife at the Wetland Mitigation/Storm Water Management areas around Route 273/Route 4 interchange. Both students have helped plant beach grass at Rehoboth for stabilization of dunes. John and Jarrad will each receive $50 of the $100 award.

Second Honorable Mention - Leslie Rensi, Alexis I. duPont High School, nominated by Amy Huebner, student advisor.

Leslie volunteers in the annual Christina River Cleanup, A. I. duPont’s Adopt-A-Highway Hillside Road Cleanup, Beach Grass Plantings as well as sponsoring Adopt-A-Whale, Adopt-A-Sea Turtle and Adopt-A-Rainforest programs. She also served as Secretary for A.I.’s Environmental Action Committee this past year. Leslie will receive a $100 award.

The Young Environmentalist of the Year Award is designed to honor Delaware High school students (in grades 9-12) whose actions have resulted in the protection, restoration or enhancement of Delaware’s natural resources through one or more of the following means: Innovations, Public Awareness, Environmental Ethics or Environmental Stewardship.

The award was established in honor of Dr. Edwin H. Clark II who served as Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control from 1989 to 1993. Funding was contributed by DNREC staff and coordinated through the Office of Information and Education. Potential winners were nominated by teachers and group leaders based on projects developed and implemented between July 1, 1999 and June 30, 2000.
