Angler Sets New Record With 942-Pound Mako Shark Catch

A new state record was set on Sunday when a mako shark was weighed in at the North Shores Marina at Delaware Seashore State Park.

The shark weighed 975 pounds and was 11 feet long with a girth of 78 inches. Thomas Barnes, of Mechanicsburg, Penn., broke the previous record of a 942-pound mako shark caught in 1992.

Barnes hooked the shark with a 100-fathom line the night before, and finally landed it after a 14-hour fight. The shark was caught aboard the Realistic, captained by Billy Verbanis. The previous state record catch was also brought aboard Verbanis’ boat.

The weight and species was confirmed by Officer Doug Long, Division of Parks and Recreation, and by Clark Evan of Old Inlet Bait and Tackle.
