Some live menhaden found with lesions
sampled at one location in Indian River
A small sampling of live menhaden collected by cast net in the Indian
River today by a DNREC biologist yielded a significant percentage with
lesions. The fish were collected in samples taken in a small area approximately
two miles upstream from Pepper Creek, site of Mondays menhaden
fish kill. Other types of fish collected today were healthy.
DNREC plans to conduct further sampling over the weekend over a broader
area due to the small number of fish collected today and the size of
the sample area.
No public advisory has been issued at this time.
While DNREC continues the sampling, the public is advised to use common
sense in the area of Buoy 42 on Indian River, and not consume fish with
lesions and to avoid water contact in the presence of dead or dying
fish. People who observe dead or dying fish or fish with lesions are
asked to report to DNRECs environmental hotline at 1-800-662-8802.
DNREC will continue its monitoring programs and will work with the
Division of Public Health to keep the public advised of any significant
findings.
