for more information. 12th Annual Beach Grass Planting Set for March 24The Division of Soil and Water Conservation, Shoreline and Waterway Management Section, will hold its 12th Annual Beach Grass Planting on Saturday, March 24. During the last 11 years, approximately 8,600 volunteers from Delaware and other states along the East Coast have participated in this one-day event to protect Delaware's dunes by planting Cape American Beach grass along Delaware's coastline. Dunes, our first line of defense against the damaging waves of coastal storms, are very susceptible to wind erosion and depend upon beach grass for their growth and survival. Beach grass helps to lower wind velocities at the dune surface, causing deposition of wind blown sand around plants and retention of existing sand. The network of underground roots extend the plant laterally as it continues to grow upwards through accumulating layers of sand. Planting beach grass not only helps to stabilize dunes, it adds to the beauty of our shoreline. This year with the help of over 700 volunteers and the Delaware Mobile Surf Fishermen the Shoreline and Waterway Management Section will be planting beach grass along approximately 3.7 miles of shoreline. Volunteers will be planting at South Bowers Beach, Cape Henlopen State Park, Gordons Pond State Park, Towers Road Bathhouse, Indian River Inlet and Fenwick Island State Park Bathhouse. Beverages for the volunteers have been donated by Pepsi Cola Bottling Company, Super G in Rehoboth and Super Fresh in Rehoboth. -30- |
