DNREC Is Searching for Young EnvironmentalistsThe Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is announcing the 2001 Young Environmentalist of the Year award program. This year's award will go to a student in grades 6, 7 or 8 who is deserving of recognition for his or her efforts in protecting the environment. The nomination must be based on actions which have taken place between July 1, 2000 and June 30, 2001. Nominations must be received by June 30, 2001. The Young Environmentalist program honors Delaware students whose actions have resulted in the protection, restoration or enhancement of Delaware's natural resources through one or more of the following means:
Classmates, teachers, parents, club or group leaders may nominate potential winners and they are encouraged to alert DNREC of the efforts of Delaware 6-8th grade students who have shown concern for Delaware and our planet through their environmental projects. A $200 award and a Delaware State Park pass will recognize the importance of and the contributions of the students to their communities. Two honorable mention winners will each receive a $100 award. Winners will be honored in a special ceremony in July at the Delaware State Fair during Fair Week, July 20-29, 2001. This is the eighth anniversary of the award in honor of Dr. Edwin H. Clark II, who served as Secretary of DNREC from 1989 until 1993. Each year, a different grade level of students is placed in nomination. The first two years, recognition was given to actions taken by middle school students. In 1996, 1997 and 1998, elementary students were honored, and in 1999 and 2000, high school students received the awards. DNREC staff provided initial funding for the program. A nomination application can be obtained from the DNREC Home Page: www.dnrec.state.de.us. Look in the "What's New" list and click on Young Environmentalist of the Year. Applications may also be requested by contacting Nancy Rolli, DNREC Office of Information and Education, 302-739-4506. -30- |
