DNREC Officer Arrests Smyrna Recycler for Illegal Dumping of TiresShawn Wharton Charged with Multiple OffensesLate yesterday, DNREC Enforcement Officers from the Department's Division of Air and Waste Management arrested Shawn T. Wharton, 25, of Temperanceville, Va., charging him with two counts of illegally dumping tires. Wharton, who purports to be the owner of Wharton's Recycling of Smyrna, Del., allegedly picked up tires from a Lincoln, Del. business. Instead of recycling or properly disposing the tires, Wharton allegedly illegally dumped them near Millsboro. Wharton is also charged with one count of criminal trespass and theft and one count of criminal impersonation and driving without a valid license. At the time of his arrest, DNREC Officers learned that Wharton was also wanted on six outstanding charges, including criminal impersonation, theft, motor vehicle violations, and a previous DNREC offense. Wharton is currently committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $3,100 bond. The tire dumping charges could result in a fine of $2,500 to $25,000.
