The Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve (DNERR) is a partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). The program is administered by DNREC's Division of Soil and Water in the Delaware Coastal Programs. The goal of the program is to establish, protect, and manage natural estuarine habitats for research and education. The primary public and educational center of DNERR is the St. Jones Center for Estuarine Studies--known as the St Jones Reserve. It is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., houses the DNERR offices and facilities, including a classroom/auditorium, wet lab, research lab, and a variety of exhibits. The property also includes a 2-mile trail through the salt marsh and surrounding areas. The education portion consists of scheduled seasonal public programs, both on and off site visits for assorted school and community groups, and workshops. The DNERR also has a "friends" group, "Friends of the St. Jones Reserve," who meet once a month for a guest speaker, presentation, lecture or outdoor activity. They are also given the opportunity to volunteer at the reserve assisting with stewardship activities, canoe trips, nature walks, and various other activities.
