DNREC Investigating 130,000 Gallon Sewage Discharge at Milford Wastewater Pump StationThe Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is investigating an unpermitted wastewater overflow from the City of Milford's Fisher Avenue wastewater pump station that occurred last month and was reported to DNREC by the city. Approximately 130,000 gallons of sewage was discharged as overflow from the station from Sunday February 18 to February 19, 2001 according to the report that Milford sent to DNREC. It appears that the discharge of wastewater into the Mispillion River and surrounding wetlands occurred because of simultaneous sump pump and control system failure. The discharge of sewage, a pollutant is a violation of Delaware's environmental laws. The pump station sends domestic and industrial wastewater from the city of Milford to the Kent County Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment and disposal. DNREC is continuing to investigate the unpermitted discharge, including the volume and duration. It will also do further investigation of the facility and its control system. Enforcement action is pending. -30- |
