March 9, 2001 For further information, contact Lloyd Alexander, 302-739-5297 Delaware Dog Licenses Must Be Renewed NowThe Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's Division of Fish and Wildlife reminds dog owners to make sure their dogs are licensed. All dog owners in Delaware, except for those residing inside the city of Wilmington which issues its own licenses, must have their dogs licensed by March 1 each year. The fine for an unlicensed dog ranges from $50 to $100 for a first offense. Licenses may be purchased at the Division's Dover office at 89 Kings Highway or at many veterinary clinics, pet shops, sporting goods stores and department stores. A current certificate of rabies immunization, signed by a veterinarian, is required to purchase a license. Licenses are not required for Seeing Eye, lead or guide dogs. To encourage spaying and neutering, licenses for sterilized dogs cost $3 for one year while those for unsterilized dogs are $6. Two-year and three-year licenses are also available if a rabies certificate is valid for the period. Licenses are not required for Seeing Eye, lead or guide dogs. According to H. Lloyd Alexander, state wildlife administrator, only a small percentage of all dogs in the state are licensed each year. "Many people are under the false impression that they do not have to obtain a license for a house dog, and are unaware of their legal obligation to obtain a dog license." Funds generated by the license sales subsidize the dog control programs of the Delaware SPCA and the Kent SPCA, which are under contract to enforce laws and respond to problems such as loose dogs and dog bites. "Licensing benefits dogs, dog owners and the community by preventing the spread of rabies and reuniting lost dogs with their owners. It also helps dog control officers resolve dog-related problems," said Alexander. In Wilmington, a yearly license, at a cost of $10, is required for all dogs. In addition, the city requires special licensing of pit bulls, pure breed and mixed breed, at a one-time fee of $80. For more information on dog licensing in Wilmington, call 302-571-4080. -30- |
