FEMA and National Flood Insurance Program Help Protect Oceanfront HomesThe shoreline of Delaware escaped the "Big Nor'easter" over the weekend - a blessing to oceanfront homeowners. Coincidentally, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is in the process of protecting two oceanfront homes in the town of South Bethany from future flood damage through a program designed to help homeowners threatened by coastal storms. The National Flood Insurance Program insures both of these homes for flood damage. The agency made a determination that it is more cost effective to remove the homes from their original pilings and replace the old pilings than to pay for storm damages. The homes now rest four feet higher on the new pilings and are well above the tides associated with coastal storms, especially Nor'easters. The project is being funded through cost sharing by the property owners and the National Flood Insurance Program. Contracts for the program are being administered by the town of South Bethany. Contact administrator Wayne Stacey, 302-539-3653. Further information on this program is available by contacting Michael Powell, Delaware Flood Mitigation Program Manager, DNREC Soil and Water Conservation, 302-739-4411, or email mpowell@state.de.us. -30- |
