Correction: On March 6, 2001, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control issued a press release regarding the Georgetown Coal Gas Site that mistakenly identified Townsends Food Company as the owner of the property located at North Race Street. The site is actually owned by SAW, Inc. and operated as a frozen vegetable plant. Also, the press release inaccurately stated that Townsends Foods Company had entered into a Voluntary Clean-up Agreement to investigate and remove contamination from the property. The parties that have actually entered into the agreement are Gas-Oil Products, Inc. and Georgetown Service and Gas Company. Below is a corrected press release concerning the matter.

Interim Soil Removal Action Set to Begin at Georgetown Coal Gas Site

Beginning the week of March 12, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's Site Investigation and Restoration Branch (SIRB) will oversee the removal of petroleum contaminated soils at the former site of the Georgetown Coal Gas Plant, located at 316 N. Race St. in Georgetown.

The Coal Gas Manufacturing Plant operated from 1910 through 1930. The buildings related to the gas plant were demolished in the 1930s. Gas-Oil Products, Inc. and Georgetown Service and Gas Company conducted an environmental investigation of the property in 1996 and found contamination in the soils related to the operation of the manufactured gas plant. These companies have agreed to remove the contaminated soils prior to construction of a warehouse on the property.

Specific activities that will occur on the property as part of the recent DNREC-approved interim action include: removal of 5,000 tons of impacted soil, transporting the excavated soil to an offsite approved facility, filling the excavated area with clean soil and covering the surface with gravel. These field activities are expected to be completed by the end of April.

During the interim response action, three existing monitoring wells will be removed and replaced with three new monitoring wells. Following removal of the contaminated soils, any remaining soils above the ground water table that remain will be tested to ensure that all the contamination was removed.
