Summer Flounder and Striped Bass Regulations Established

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has established the 2001 recreational fishing regulations for summer flounder and striped bass.

Secretary Nicholas A. DiPasquale signed an Order yesterday, Feb. 8, 2001, setting the minimum size limit for summer flounder at 16 inches - up one-half inch from the 2000 limit of 15.5 inches. The daily creel limit is seven - down one from the 2000 creel limit of eight.

Recreational fishing for summer flounder will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays from Jan. 1 through June 30, Mondays only from July 1 through Aug. 25 and Mondays and Tuesdays from Aug. 26 through Dec. 31. Closing only on certain weekdays avoids any prolonged seasonal closures that inevitably affect local fishing interests and tourism.

Delaware is required to reduce its 2001 summer flounder recreational landings by 40 percent relative to the average 1998-2000 recreational landings in order to remain in compliance with the Fishery Management Plan for Summer Flounder approved by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.

The striped bass recreational minimum size and creel limit for 2001 remains the same as in 2000: one striped bass at no less than 24inches but no more then 28 inches per day; and one striped bass at no less than 28 inches per day. There is no closed season for recreational striped bass fishermen.
