Cape Henlopen State Park Reopens Pier

The fishing pier at Cape Henlopen State Park, closed since Jan. 1 while park crews and Sussex Boot Camp cadets completed redecking the first 1,200 feet, will reopen on March 1.

Repairs are still underway in a few spots, but will be barricaded and should not pose a safety problem to anglers and sightseers, according to Park Superintendent Pat Cooper. He expects the replacement of worn decking to be completed within the next week or two.

"Just in time for the return of the fish to the Delaware Bay," Cooper said. "Fishermen keep checking with us about the reopening. They're anxious to get their lines in the water."

The decking was last replaced on that section of the pier in 1979, at the same time a 10-foot walkway to the western part of the "T-head" was built.

The 600 feet at the far end of the 1,800-foot pier and the eastern section of the "T-head" that were heavily damaged by fire in the early 1970s were rebuilt three years ago by the Division of Parks and Recreation and the Division of Fish and Wildlife.
