Towne Point Elementary in the Lead in "Kids for a Greener Delaware" Recycling Contest

Towne Point Elementary is getting into the business of recycling.

The Dover students have shown their competitive spirit and enthusiasm for resource conservation by taking the lead in the "Kids for a Greener Delaware" contest, sponsored by the state's Departments of Education and Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Delaware Solid Waste Authority.

During January, Towne Point Elementary students collected 3,916 pounds of recyclables, 616 pounds more than the second highest amount collected by students at Gallagher Elementary in Newark. Jennie Smith Elementary in Newark is currently in third place with 2,706 pounds.

Other elementary schools participating in the statewide contest are: Bancroft Academy and Brandywine Springs in Wilmington, Forest Oak in Newark, Reading Intermediate in Middletown and Booker T. Washington in Dover.

The recycling contest will continue through May 2001. First, second and third-place contest winners will receive $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000, respectively, based on the total amount of recyclables collected during the five-month period. Other participating schools will receive $500 for collecting a minimum of 5,000 pounds. The awards will be presented to the schools' parent-teacher organizations.

The "Kids for a Greener Delaware" contest was developed last year by Gov. Carper to increase recycling efforts within schools and their surrounding communities as well as to provide an opportunity for elementary students to learn first hand the environmental and economic values of conservation.

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority provided 'RECYCLE DELAWARE' containers, and the schools provided space for the recycling centers and agreed to maintain them for two years.
