Citizens Source Water Assessment Committee to Meet March 7

The Citizens and Technical Advisory Committee (CTAC) of the Source Water Assessment and Protection Program will meet March 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the second floor conference room of the Department of Public Safety building in Dover.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved Delaware's Source Water Assessment Plan in October 1999. The program is charged with delineating source water areas around all public water supply wells in the state, identifying all existing and potential sources of contamination within those areas and making the information available to the public.

Agenda items for the March 7 meeting include:

  • Source water assessment policies;
  • Surface water assessment update and surface water sampling proposal;
  • Review of assessment maps;
  • Sampling of public drinking water systems in the vicinity of Superfund sites; and
  • Summary of Pesticides in Ground Water study by Delaware Department of Agriculture and Delaware Geological Survey.

Source water assessments are currently underway for the following public water supply systems: Wilmington, Newark, Dover, United Water Company, Felton, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Felton, and Selbyville. When completed, these assessments will be available to the public on the source water web site (http://www.wr.udel.edu/swap/swp1.html), at the public water supplier offices, or DNREC. The completion of assessments is prioritized based on population served, system request or identified water quality problems.
