Division of Fish and Wildlife to Hold Public Hearing Feb. 20 on Proposed Changes to Black Sea Bass Size and Harvest

The Division of Fish and Wildlife, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, will hold a public hearing Tuesday, Feb. 20 beginning at 7:30 p.m. to accept testimony and evidence on proposed amendments to tidal finfish regulations pertaining to the recreational harvest of black sea bass. The hearing will be held in the DNREC auditorium of the Richardson and Robbins Building, 89 Kings Highway, Dover.

The Fishery Management Plan for black sea bass requires the recreational harvest to be reduced by 27 percent relative to the 2000 harvest to meet the 2001 target. The proposed minimum size limit is an increase from 10 inches to 11 inches with a daily creel limit of 25 sea bass, and a closed fishing season from Jan. 1 through May 9 for recreational fishermen.

The changes are proposed for Delaware to remain in compliance with the Fishery Management Plan for black sea bass approved by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the Mid Atlantic Fishery Management Council.

Individuals are invited to present their opinions and evidence and/or request additional information by writing or visiting the Fisheries Section, Division of Fish and Wildlife, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, DE 19901, or by calling 302-739-3441. The record for written comments will remain open until 4:30 p.m., March 2, 2001.
