Vol. 30, No. 368 For more information, call Kathleen Jamison, Information and Education Office, 302-739-4506 Outdoor Delaware Magazine Sponsors State Parks 50th Anniversary Photo ContestThe Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Resource's Outdoor Delaware Magazine is sponsoring a photo contest to celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of Delaware's state park system, which began with the establishment of Fort Delaware State Park and Trap Pond State Park in 1951. Photographers - including the "point and shoot" variety as well as serious students of the art - are invited to help showcase the scenic beauty, diverse plant and animal life, and varied outdoor recreation activities of 14 state parks and other properties of the Division of Parks and Recreation, including nature preserves and historic and cultural sites, according to Outdoor Delaware editor Kathleen M. Jamison. "If you have a camera and an eye for the beauty, fun and excitement of Delaware State Parks, you should 'take your best shot' between now and the Oct. 15, 2001 deadline," Jamison said. "We are announcing the contest early so photographers will have four seasons to take fabulous pictures." Entries must be 35-mm color transparencies. Each contestant may enter 20 slides; there is no entry fee. The cover of the winter 2001 magazine will feature the best overall photo. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners in four categories: Outdoor Bound, Four Seasons, Natural State and Scenic-Pictorial. There is a special youth category for photographers up to age 16. Rules are on the Delaware State Parks website - www.destateparks.com - or may be picked up at state park offices and nature centers, at DNREC's Office of Information and Education, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, or some camera shops. 5OTH ANNIVERSARY PHOTO CONTEST RULESWHO MAY ENTER: Any photographer, amateur, professional or youth, except employees of the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation or their immediate families. Young photographers up to age 16 compete in a special category. No more than 20 entries will be accepted from one contestant. There is no entry fee, however Outdoor Delaware and the Division reserve the non-exclusive right to retain any photograph to use in publications for promotional purposes. Photo credit will be given to the photographer when photos are used. MEDIUM: 35-mm color transparencies only; must be mounted in standard cardboard or plastic slide mounts. Duplicates will be accepted, however, winners may be asked to submit originals for publication. Place name and address on the frame of each color slide and number slides to match entry sheets. ENTRIES: To qualify, photographs submitted must have been made
in 2000 or 2001 in Delaware State Parks or at other properties of the
Division of Parks and Recreation, including natural areas, nature preserves
and historic and cultural sites; they must not have been published.
Entries should include a model release for any recognizable people,
if feasible. A data sheet containing the following information must
accompany each slide: To avoid damage, all entries should be packaged in cardboard for mailing. Entries will be returned only if a self-addressed pre-paid return envelope is included with entry. While every effort will be made to return submissions in their original condition, Outdoor Delaware assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged entries. Mail or deliver entries to: Photo Contest CATEGORIES: Entrants should categorize all their photos; however, the judges reserve the right to recategorize any entry they feel would better fit another category. The categories are: Outdoor Bound - actions and activities of people enjoying Delaware's great state parks. Four Seasons - seasonal shots highlighting beauty, excitement and fun in the state parks throughout the year. Natural State - the flora and fauna of the state parks: trees, wildflowers, native plants; wild mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, etc. Scenic-pictorial - photos in which landscapes, scenery, weather or inanimate objects are the main theme. Young photographers - any of the above subjects. CLOSING DATE: Entries must be postmarked no later than Oct. 15, 2001. JUDGING: Entries will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality and effectiveness in expressing the contest theme, Celebrating Delaware State Parks. Judging will be done by Division of Parks and Recreation and magazine staffs. The decision of the judges is final. RESTRICTIONS: Winners agree to allow Outdoor Delaware and the Division of Parks and Recreation publish their photographs in print or electronic form in a future issue or issues of Outdoor Delaware or related Division publications and to use the pictures for advertising and promotional purposes without further payment. PRIZES: A grand prize of $250 and a cover of Outdoor Delaware will be awarded for the best overall photo. First place winners in each category will receive $100. Second place winners in each category will receive $50. Third place winners in each category will receive $25. The judges reserve the right to decide whether a category contains work that merits awards - three prizes may not be awarded in all categories. Winners will be published in the Winter 2001 issue of Outdoor Delaware. Photographers receiving honorable mention will have their photographs and credits listed on the web site.
