State Parks Will Recycle Christmas Trees

For the seventh year, the state Division of Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with the state Division of Forestry, will sponsor a Christmas Tree Recycling Program. Citizens can bring trees to drop-off locations at Bellevue, Brandywine Creek, Lums Pond, White Clay Creek, Killens Pond, Cape Henlopen and Trap Pond state parks during daylight hours between Dec. 26 and Jan. 16.

Trees should be free of all lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments, nails, stands and other materials that are not part of the natural tree. Flocked trees cannot be recycled and will not be accepted. Trees from commercial haulers will not be accepted.

"Our Christmas Tree Recycling Program is popular because it offers people an easy and environmentally sensitive way to dispose of their trees after the holidays," said Gary Focht, Killens Pond State Park administrator and statewide tree recycling program coordinator. "Last year, thanks to the Bellevue and Lums Pond recycling programs alone, nearly 3,000 holiday trees were diverted from New Castle County landfills."

Not only do the recycled trees save precious landfill space, they also provide an aromatic ground cover that reduces soil erosion and deters weed growth. The mulch will be available to the public free of charge at participating parks starting Feb. 3.

"We want to make people aware that once you have used organic material like a Christmas tree, it can be recycled instead of going into a landfill," said Focht.
