State Division of Parks and Recreation Wins National Award for Outstanding Contribution

The Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation received a National Recreation and Park Association's ROSE (Recognition of Significant Efforts) Award at the organization's recent 2000 Congress and Exposition in Phoenix, Arizona. Created in 1994, the award recognizes those who have "gone the extra mile" to advance parks and recreation in communities throughout the U.S.

"We are honored to receive this prestigious recognition as we complete our first 50 years of service,"said Division Director Charles A. Salkin. "All Delawareans should be proud of their state park system."

The award was accepted on behalf of the Division by Bellevue State Park Administrator Paul Nicholson; Brandywine Creek State Park Assistant Superintendent Laura Madara; Jan Durham, Director's Office; and Jill Racz, Planning, Preservation and Development Section.

Copies of the award were presented to each of Delaware's 14 state parks at the Division's annual awards luncheon on Friday, Dec. 1.

The Delaware Parks and Recreation Council nominated the Division for the prestigious industry award. Chairman Ronald Mears, Townsend, cited the Division's successes in "building an outstanding organization over the last 50 years, including acquisition through the Open Space Program of more than 31,000 acres of ocean and bay beachfronts, woodlands, rolling hills and stream valleys just since 1990."

According to Mears, "These natural lands are providing a legacy that is irreplaceable in a small and rapidly growing state."

The NRPA also credited the Division with initiating an enterprise system to encourage special facilities to become self-supporting; developing staff capabilities for new responsibilities, including marketing, archaeology, preservation of artifacts and research; preserving historic buildings on park lands; taking a leadership role in the development of the state's greenways program; expanding the public use of land resources; and developing outstanding cultural and nature-oriented programs.
