No Brevetoxin Detected in Shellfish Samples

No brevetoxin has been detected in mussels sampled in Bald Eagle Creek nor from clams taken from Indian River and Rehoboth bays late last month. The analytical tests were conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina Center for Marine Science in Wilmington.

The mussels were sampled Sept. 30 at Bald Eagle Creek. Approximately 20 samples were taken at the most downstream site, adjacent to homes and close to the golf course; approximately 40 samples were taken at the point in Rehoboth Bay in front of the clubhouse of Rehoboth Beach Yacht and Country Club.

The cherrystone, hard clams were a commercial, composite sampling harvested Sept. 28 from approved open beds in the Rehoboth Bay and Indian River Bay. They were purchased Sept. 29 from a local seafood dealer.

Yesterday, mussel samples and water samples were again taken from Bald Eagle Creek and Torquay Canal and shipped to the National Oceanographic Service Laboratory in Charleston, S.C.; the Florida Marine Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and the University of North Carolina Center for Marine Sciences in Wilmington. The mussels will be analyzed for brevetoxin, and the water will be analyzed for Chattonella cell counts and brevetoxin. The Division of Water Resources will continue testing shellfish for the presence of brevetoxin and will report results as they become available.
