Crabbing Pier, Shoreline Stabilization Set for Holts Landing State ParkConstruction of a 225-foot crabbing pier, a stone breakwater, and dune
and marsh plantings to stabilize eroding shoreline will begin at Holts
Landing State Park in October and be completed within the next five
months. The pier will include a 16-foot by 48-foot T-head which will be used for crabbing and fishing. The area of bio-stabilization, which is 1,100 feet long, will provide protection from wind-driven waves and coastal storms. The 204-acre park on the south shore of Indian River Bay is the smallest of Delaware's beach parks and, to date, the least developed. It is a favorite of crabbers and clammers and visitors who prefer to "get away from it all." "We don't plan to change the feel of Holt's Landing," according to Division of Parks and Recreation Director Charles A. Salkin. "Our goal is to provide convenient and safe access to the water for crabbing and fishing. In addition, the shoreline stabilization will enhance the aesthetic and ecological conditions, restore recreational opportunities and protect park facilities, all of which have been damaged by the severe erosion of the past several decades." The contractor for the project is W.H. Streit, Inc. of Hammonton, N.J. -30- Document number 40-01/00/10/1 |
