Explore groundhog folklore and the history of Groundhog Day. Learn about hibernation and other habits of groundhogs, as well as other animals of Killens Pond State Park. Then, join in on groundhog activities and games. Sign up at the park office or call 302-284-4526 to register by the day before the program. Meet at the Killens Pond Nature Center. $2 per person. Nature Under Ice, Saturday, February 10, 1 p.m. Come on a hike to discover how nature survives the long and frigid winter. From how insects survive the cold to tracking animals through the snow, participants will learn all about nature in winter. Back at the Killens Pond Nature Center, learn how to make snow cream (with or without snow on the ground) and design your own paper snowflake. Open to ages 5 and older. Sign up at the park office or call 302 284-4526 to register by the day before the program. Meet at the nature center. $3 per person. Ice Storm Trail Hike, Saturday, February 17, 1 p.m. In February 1994, an ice storm devastated parts of Killens Pond State Park Join the park naturalist on a hike along our Ice Storm Trail, a section of the park most affected by the storm. Learn how a forest and its inhabitants rebound after a destructive natural event. During the hike, learn about the wildlife that took advantage of the downed trees along this special trail. Sign up at the park office or call 302- 284-4526 to register by the day before the program. Meet at the Ice Storm Trail entrance sign. Winter Wonderland Walk, Saturday, February 24, 1 p.m. A brisk four-mile walk through the beautiful winter scenery of Killens Pond State Park is an excellent way to break out of the winter blues. Bundle up and join the park naturalist on this interpretive walk highlighting winter wildlife and the park's history.
