Jan. 16, 2001 For further information, contact Franchon Beeks, Site Investigation and Restoration Branch, 302-395-2680 Interim Response Action Proceeding at Georgetown CleanersDepartment of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's Site Investigation and Restoration Branch, under the Hazardous Substances Cleanup Act (HSCA), is currently overseeing the Interim Response Action (IRA) at Georgetown Cleaners located at 305 N. Race St., Georgetown, Del. The IRA is being conducted to mitigate the environmental concerns posed by the residual soil contamination at the site. DNREC studies indicated that residual contamination was found in subsurface soil at the site and depths of contamination ranged from 2 to 10 feet below grade. The IRA project consists of the removal of soil containing the dry cleaning solvent tetrachloroethene (PCE) from the site. The scope of work for the project includes the excavation and off-site disposal of approximately 275 tons of contaminated soil, the application of potassium permanganate used to break down any residual contamination, and the installation of three new monitoring wells at the site. The potassium permanganate solution and the treated soils may appear purple in color. The Interim Response Action began on Jan. 8 and is to be completed
