About Us
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) formed the Yard Waste Management Committee in the wake of efforts to enact legislation (S.B. 225) which is designed to divert household recyclables and yard waste from the state’s waste stream which is currently deposited into state landfills. The proposed legislation would require residents and businesses to keep yard waste separate from other trash and would require trash haulers to take the yard waste to composting and mulching facilities rather than to landfills. This requirement would save resources and prolong the life of landfills in the state as well as provide an incentive for the creation and expansion of small businesses that could turn the diverted material into a valuable resource.
The Yard Waste Management Committee's objectives are to:
- Review, revise, and develop a plan for the management of yard waste.
- Develop guidelines for yard waste mulching and composting facilities.
- Identify private sector interest in yard waste mulching and composting.
- Identify markets for mulch and compost.
